Cool Stuff So Far at DEMOfall

And I’m not even there yet! I’m just on the plane reviewing webarchives I saved before I left of some of the startups that’ll be debuting at the event. Well, at least these sound cool now, in concept. The proof is always in observing the on-stage demos, then asking questions of the founders later.

Mindtouch has renamed its wiki appliance the DekiBox (deki is “smart” in Japanese), so much better than their old name. It’s available in two versions: a 25-user version for $3,000 and a 100-user version for $5,000. Seems like a very attractive price point for the benefits such a device promises.

Genius Interactive is announcing an AJAX-based, on-demand service that lets companies track how customers are using their site and then personalize the experience and interact with them. Here’s how NetworkWorld described it: “The customer clicks on a link and the browser kicks off the dynamic application, which notifies sales representatives via e-mail or SMS that the customer is on the site. The sales representative can bookmark product pages with virtual notes or special coupons, or chat live with the customer.” Sounds to me like a pretty cool AJAX business app.

RingCube will debut MojoPac, which lets you put any app on any storage drive. So, for example, this software will let you install, say, Microsoft Office on an iPod, and then let you run it from the iPod instead of the PC. How cool is that? And, no, you don’t need to put the OS on the device.

• Photobot from Tribeca Labs is software that uses advanced photo-enhancement algorithms to automatically enhance images taken by a digital camera. The software scans your hard drive and enhances the images in the folders you specify in your setup – doing things like red-eye removal and adjusting exposure settings and color. “The software will find bad pictures and make them good, and good photos and make them better,” says James Graham of Tribeca Labs. Who’s it aimed at? You got it — the average Joe who wants nothing to do with fixing his shots; just wants to shoot ’em and show ’em. But that’s a big market.

That’s it from 35,000 feet. More when I land and take a taxi over to the Harbor Island Sheraton to take in the opening reception…

Semantic Web Goes Blue at DEMOfall

Adaptiveblue is launching its blueorganizer Firefox extension at DEMOfall next week. Chris Shipley, executive producer of the conference, said it will give us a “glimpse of powerful semantic Web technologies to come.”

Adaptiveblue is a personalization and smart browsing company founded by Alex Iskold in early 2006. Adaptiveblue500w The vision of adaptiveblue, says the company, is to invent new browser technologies that deliver a personalized Web experience, enhance productivity, and save time.

Among other things, Alex writes frequently for Web 2.0 journal, Ajax World magazine, and the Read/Write blog. There’s more about him here. And here’s what some people are saying about the product. Amazon’s Web Services Blog recently said this.

Blueorganizer uses Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service), which it calls “storage for the Internet” … “designed to make web-scale computing easier for developers.”

A Bloggers Heyday in San Diego

Looks like the upcoming DEMO show will draw a ton of bloggers once again. The PR folks tell me the list already includes such names as TechCrunch, MobileCrunch, Techdirt, GigaOM, Gizmodo, Engadget, ForbesOnTech, buzzmodo, Kauffman’s eVenturing blog, Marc Orchant, Dan Farber, Paul Kedrosky’s Infectious Greed, and others…including yours truly, of course. Demofall06logo I’ll continue to post a heads up or two about companies who’ll be presenting there over the next few days, and will be blogging onsite as well — starting late Monday night or early Tuesday morning, as the opening session fires up.

Oh, many of the usual press suspects will be there, too, I’m told: AP, USA Today, Business2.0, CNet, WSJ, PC Magazine, Forbes, Computerworld, InformationWeek, ZDNet. Notice how I list them second? 🙂

MindTouch Wants to Wow With Wikibox at DEMOfall

St. Paul-based MindTouch…no, wait, it’s headquartered in San Diego….no, wait, most of its people are in Minnesota. Oh, who cares — they have a whiz-band new wiki box Mindtouchlogo I’d heard they’d be debuting at DEMOfall week after next. Picked that up at the “MinneDemo” event last week, and I blogged at least a mention of them and Aaron Fulkerson in my recap the next day. Gee, going from “Minne” to the full-on Monty demo at the biggest of all demo venues in the universe — all inside of three weeks! These guys have it goin’ on for a little outfit from Minnesota (or is it San Diego?). Here’s an article from the St. Paul Pioneer Press today that kinda lays it all out — or should I say, lays it on thick? [Example: “the next must-have office machine for small to medium-sized businesses — as common as a fax machine”] I’ll be following up on MindTouch soon, pre or during DEMOfall. Now if we can only get ’em to stop calling their wiki box a “managed office server.” [Can you tell these guys are former Microsofties? Not for the use of the second word, but for the lack of any name cachet. End of editorializing…]

Austrians to Attack DEMOfall!

Hey, maybe The Governator will drop by, too? [Becky, could you work on that?] SystemOne, headquartered in Vienna, will be launching its enterprise collaboration platform at the upcoming DEMOfall event. Here’s their one-sentence company description [read with Ahh-nold accent]: “System One helps businesses to ensure lasting success by making optimal use of the knowledge production factor.” Got that? I can hardly wait till their six minutes of fame. Techcrunch reported that SystemOne’s product is a wiki “that gathers your resources as you write.” The writer, Marshall Kirkpatrick, goes on to say: “The real power here is the semantic analysis, the relevance.” Who could not like that, especially any blogger? Trouble is, it’ll be mid-’07 till a version for the little guy is available. They’re starting at the top and dumbing down. Here’s a screencast so you can see how it works. Stand by — I’ll definitely be reporting more on this one from San Diego…
