Minnedemo – Hot Damn!

Oh, was the joint a-jumpin’ Thursday night, gang. For those of you who weren’t there, that joint was O’Gara’s Garage in St. Paul. For those of you who were — lucky you (especially if you were smart enough to get there early). The crowd had to be 350 or 400 — it was basically shoulder-to-shoulder at its peak. The schmoozin’ was in high gear, the kegs were flowing (7 kinds!), and there wasn’t even any entertainment!  Well, I guess we were our own entertainment — and six of our community’s latest, hot startups got up on stage halfway into the evening to pitch their wares. Don’t let anyone tell you the Minnesota tech community isn’t hotter than a pistol! You could feel the energy, the entrepreneurial juices flowing.  You know we have something special going on here in Minnesota when you experience one of these BarCamp events (which we call Minnebar and Minnedemo) — and when you see how we keep attracting more and more of the important players from the community with every meeting.Minnedemocrowdstefanhartwig

What was the coolest thing I heard at the event? That was from Robert Stephens, the illustrious founder of Minnesota’s own Geek Squad (acquired by Best Buy in 2002). See my recent coverage of Robert being named MN Entrepreneur of the Year. And, yes, he was just interviewed on 60 Minutes, too! I had a great chat with Robert, during which I mentioned that I’d heard Best Buy was hosting an event that very day in Silicon Valley, just for VCs.  He said, yeah, that he was supposed to be speaking there. I asked why he wasn’t. "Because I’d rather be here. I really believe in the Minnesota tech community."  Now, is that freaking cool, or what?  Screw the Valley, he’s more interested in the action here! Robert is a major supporter of our state’s entrepreneurs — a hero in our midst, for sure.

What else really impressed me?  Well, besides the great startups that pitched and just the huge energy of our collective developer/entrepreneur/interactive/marketing community, I have to say that I continue to be really pumped about the quality of new players we keep drawing to these events. We had partners from at least two major VCs firms (and three more I knew really wanted to be there but had schedule conflicts), another from the largest "network of angel networks" in the country, an investment banker whom I know is currently raising a large chunk for a local startup, and more major, local angel investors than I’ve seen at any of our previous meetings. Yes, that’s right, the guy (or lady) you were standing next to could be one — so, don’t spill beer on ’em!  🙂  Seriously, they were there to catch the buzz on what’s new, who’s starting up what, and to schmooze with their colleagues about the latest deals circulating. [Unfortunately, some of the newer ones didn’t realize how noisy these gatherings get, and how hard it can be to hear the presenters, unless you move right up near the stage. But, hopefully they’ll follow up with individual entrepreneurs for one-on-ones — that’s really the intended outcome, anyway, for the startups pitching at these events.] And there were major dudes present as well from some of our state’s largest Internet-related businesses — trust me, I know these people! And I brokered at least two key introductions of local startups to some of these guys. They definitely wanted to know more about some of the technologies pitched. And, there’s more — we even had an NBA player, formerly of the Timberwolves (and a serious geek), in our midst! Not to forget our local media people — I know the Business Journal was present. Not sure if the Trib or the Pioneer Press made it (I was just too busy to see everyone I wanted to).  And, you just know that Minnesota’s best and brightest tech bloggers were there — Steve Borsch, Ed Kohler, Ben Higginbotham, and….well, you know. And so many of the developer attendees have great blogs of their own as well!  (See the links in the list of attendees on the Minnedemo site for those.)

So, who were the startup founders that pitched?  Well, it was an awesome combination of really smart developers, serial entrepreneurs, a major ad-agency producer, a female entrepreneur with a company just coming out of stealth, even a former Silicon Valley researcher that holds a patent on the technology he was pitching.  Minnedemoadaptiveave
People, you would be amazed if you drilled into the backgrounds of these folks — I can say that because I know many of them. There was a huge amount of experience and expertise represented on that stage on Thursday night — a proud moment for Minnesota entrepreneurship. Here’s a quick rundown on who got 10 minutes each to pitch to this raucous crowd:

•CrashPlan (Matthew Dornquast) – a virtual appliance for automatic, off-site backup
•FanChatter (Marty Wetherall) – mobile sports fan chat, photos, more (see news release)
•SOTAcomm (Gary Doan) – plug-and-play appliances integrating best-of-breed open-source "unified communications" apps for running a small business
•Wonderfile (David Carnes) – tag-based file management and collaboration
•Pokeware (Maryse Thomas) – monetizing video streams by giving consumers extensive access to products and information within them (see news release)
•Adaptive Avenue (David Quimby) – distributed commerce, "site within a banner," enabling a whole new category of clicks ("engagement" clicks)

But did you think we only have six startups here in Minnesota worthy of presenting?  Wrong, bucko! There were sixteen more — count ’em, 16!! — who were stacked up on the waiting list in case someone dropped out. It’s great to know that if you can work hard, think big, and make good stuff that improves people’s lives or work, or just helps them have more fun online — whatever! — that you can make a real contribution to our economy, and advance your own lot in life as well.

Big Week for Tech in Minnesota

Lots of things happening here in the Twin Cities technology community this second week in October. The IPO of local tech darling Compellent Technologies is expected to price tomorrow and start trading on Wednesday. I caught the news as soon as the Wall Street Journal hit my front step at 6 a.m. this morning (page C7): Offerings Rejuvenate IPO Market – Compellent Technologies, Virgin Mobile Will Debut; Heavy Buzz, But Any Pop? (subscription required, but soon Rupert Murdoch may change all that!). Compellentlogo
For those who can’t click through to the story, here are a couple of excerpts:

A computer-network-storage company and a provider of
cellular-phone service will be the focus of the market for initial
public offerings this week.

The market for such deals still is coming back to life
after its late-summer break, with six offerings that together could
raise as much as $1.39 billion scheduled to debut over the next five
days. If all actually make it that far, they will top the
companies that went public in all of September. ….

Compellent Technologies Inc., an unprofitable but
fast-growing computer-network-storage company, is getting much of the
buzz. It is scheduled to begin trading Wednesday on the NYSE Arca under
the symbol CML. Research firm Gartner Inc. named Compellent the world’s
fastest-growing disk-storage company last year, just four years after
it was formed …. Compellent…revenue
doubled in the first six months to $20.9 million, compared with a year
earlier. The company is selling 12 million shares between $10 and $12.

That’s a big IPO, folks — but 12 million shares is a typo. [I love it when I can catch typos in the venerable Wall Street Journal 🙂 ] An accompanying chart (not in the online version) says 6.9 million, which sounds more like it. That will still put the amount raised somewhere in the range of $69-83 million, which makes it the largest tech IPO in this town in quite some time.  Compellent has raised more than $50 million in venture capital, beginning in 2002 with investments by Crescendo Ventures and El Dorado Ventures, both Silicon Valley firms populated by former Minneapolitans I know. The MN Startup Schmoozin’ Event of the Season
The day after watching the big IPO pop or not, we switch our emphasis to the new, upcoming success stories in the MN startup community! The long-awaited periodic gathering of our local tech entrepreneurs and developers, playfully called Minnedemo, fires up at 6:30 pm on Thursday. Minnedemo
It’s a free event, and is at St.Paul’s legendary Irish bar and restaurant, O’Gara’s (actually, we’ll be in the large, attached venue called O’Gara’s Garage.) This organization is part of the very popular grass-roots BarCamp phenomenon, which is international in scope. The last event we had for our local group, an all-day Saturday event in the spring (see my coverage), was the largest Barcamp event to that date ever in the U.S., with close to 400 in attendance! So, don’t let anyone tell you the Twin Cities isn’t a hot tech market!!  I’m betting this event will pull close to 300, and the first 200 to show up get two free beers or sodas — can you beat that?  That’s courtesy of our illustrious sponsors (see site).  And I’m betting there’ll be some good munchies, too. After an hour of networking, six local startups will demo their offerings [note: no Powerpoint allowed — yeah!]:  Adaptive Avenue, FanChatter, Pokeware, PROserver Virtual Appliance, SOTAcomm, and Wonderfile. The Company That Started It All
I owe a lot to Control Data. I may have been only a mere neophyte when I worked there, but, wow, did they put a lot of trust in me, and did I ever learn a lot.  They actually gave me some rope to do stuff, and they just kept promoting me!  How cool is that?  And I kept stepping up to the challenge. It was a fun, fun ride, and I will forever be grateful to this technology pioneer, this unbelievable cauldron of innovation and entrepreneurship to which our entire state’s IT community owes a huge debt of gratitude — if not its very existence. Do you realize how many thousands of companies were spawned by Control Data?
I cannot miss this event on Friday, and I invite anyone who’s involved in the local information technology to attend. You’ll be in some very great company! It’s the Control Data 50 Year Celebration at the Minneapolis Convention Center on Friday afternoon, and it’s even free. One of my favorite all-time entrepreneurs will be speaking, a guy I admire tremendously: Larry Jodsaas.  He was a Control Data executive who later risked it all to lead VTC Inc., a Control Data semiconductor spinout, which was a huge success and became a 15-year client relationship for me before it was acquired by Lucent (Agere) in 1999. It’s a great story.  There’s a cocktail reception following this event and, for those who sign up separately, a dinner after that, with U.S. Senator Norm Coleman speaking. I’m really excited about this event, and I hope you’ll join me!

I’m gonna have to try getting onto BatchBlue’s free site for DEMOfall attendees (see my previous post on that company) so I can reconnect with people — both these and the ones I didn’t get cards from. There are so many conversations I wanted to have, so many great new companies and technologies I wanted to learn more about, so many old contacts I wanted to reconnect with, but (sigh) just not enough time. These two-day events are such a whirlwind!

‘MN Cup’ Awards: A Celebration of MN Entrepreneurship

Hundreds of participants in Minnesota’s startup community gathered at the University of Minnesota Alumni Center on Thursday for a fun, upbeat evening that included the annual Minnesota Cup awards presentation. This statewide competition seeks out aspiring entrepreneurs and their breakthrough ideas, looking for the next great entrepreneurial success story in Minnesota. It’s open to all entrepreneurs, “high tech or no tech, whether you are just putting your ideas into a business plan or if you’ve been out building your venture.” This year’s competition, the third annual, was launched on March 30, 2007, and attracted nearly 500 entrants. During the evening’s program, we heard remarks from the president of the U, Robert Bruininks, and the dean of the U’s Carlson School, Alison Davis-Blake. Bruininks said 19,000 companies have been founded by U of M grads over the years, employing 1.1M people in 50 states and 63 countries. I was surprised to hear that 75% of grads from Minnesota stay here after they get their degrees, and 40% of out-of-state grads stay here as well. Alison Davis-Blake said that the Carlson School’s entrepreneurial studies program is now the fourth largest major, and soon will be third. It’s grown 4x in five years, she said. She closed her talk, however, with what could only be called a sobering challenge for the state: “Minnesota is falling behind in entrepreneurship,” she said. “The energy is deteriorating.” By one measure, she said the state ranks 48th out of 50. [A collective “oooooh” went up from the crowd — as in big ouch!] She was laying down the gauntlet for all of us: “We need a dramatic improvement in innovation here.” Blake closed by ensuring us that the Carlson School is “committed to inspiring and educating the next generation of Minnesota entrepreneurs.”

A Master of the Craft
Next up was a highlight of the event for me: the “Entrepreneur of the Year” award. Gary Holmes, who’s the successful entrepreneur behind the U of M Center for Entrepreneurship, got up on stage to introduce Robert Stephens of the Geek Squad, this year’s award recipient. I’d heard Robert speak once before, and he was tremendous….funny, straight up, right from the heart. Nothing stuffy or boring about this guy! He’s exudes excitement and passion and living his own brand. Once again, we weren’t disappointed. What a great choice for a guy to be so honored, as he continues building out his business, which Best Buy acquired in 2002. Geeksquadlogo He’s still very much active in running the Geek Squad. Robert opened his talk with a great intro on what his brand is all about: “Imagine a world without manuals. Now imagine a force that dedicates itself, monk like, to reading these manuals — even for stuff they don’t own!” The man knows how to market and have fun — and, hey, does it really get any better than that in the world of marketing? Robert went on to tell the story about how he dropped out of the U of M back in the early ’90s — to, of course, launch his business. In recent years, however, he’s invited back to the U a lot to talk to students. “I think I have now spent more time talking to students than I did being one,” he said. [He put in a hint later that, now that he’s won the Enterpreneur of the Year award, he’s hoping someday to get an honorary degree from the U as well… 🙂 ] Robertstephenswife Stephens also told a cute story about how he wanted to marry his wife back in the mid-’90s, but probably wouldn’t have been able to build the business he did if he’d have done that. Instead, they held off and married a few years ago. (That’s her in the photo I took after the event. I was delighted to realize, during Robert’s talk, that she was right next to me at the table where I happened to sit down. She must be a remarkable person, too. As with all successful entrepreneurs, the significant other deserves a lot of the credit, and Robert was gracious in saying so.) By the way, in the photo, note Robert’s Blues Brothers-style clip on tie, and the Geek Squad tie pin. Always living the brand… 🙂 Maybe he and his wife even drove over in one of those cute black-and-white Beetles, too.

An amazing thing I learned about Robert is that he never took on investors in his business. “I applied for a bank loan once, and didn’t get it,” he said. He added, in a note of encouragement to the many entrepreneurs and student-entrepreneurs in the audience: “If you’re poor and struggling, you’re in the best place to be. You have nothing to lose, and you don’t owe anything to anybody.” As his business grew, he went on to look at possibly franchising the concept. But, one day, he just decided to knock on Best Buy’s door. He told them (this would have been founder and now chairman Dick Schulze, or Brad Anderson, now CEO), “Most of my people used to work for you. We can compete or we can work together. Like Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, it could be a great combination!” The rest is history, and he said he’ll soon enter his eighth year working with the consumer electronics retail giant — where the Geek Squad is the nucleus of the company’s huge push into consumer services, and part of its growing Best Buy for Business initiative as well. Stephens said of his Best Buy experience: “I got a degree in hard knocks founding Geek Squad. Now I’m getting an MBA in the corporate world at Best Buy.” He said he finds it fascinating how the company is actively exploring why companies tend to innovate less as they get bigger. “Best Buy experienced near-death a couple of times. Now they stay paranoid, because the Costcos, the Dells, the eBays keep them that way.” At Best Buy, he said, there’s always a way to innovate.

“I have a vision for Minnesota,” said Stephens. “We have way more advantages here than meets the eye. It’s no suprise to me that so many great companies are located here … Life is harder here. But we sit by the fire and strategize. We’re innovators here!” He said he really wants to see much more entrepreneurship in Minnesota. And he even advised entrepreneurs to “hold off taking money if you can, to build your business.”

In closing, Stephens said Geek Squad now has more than 12,000 “agents” (employees and contractors). He said he likes to tell them, “You won’t solve world peace, but you might fix the hard drive of someone who will. Or cure cancer.” He said U of M staff and researchers have been big customers of his over the years.

The man gets PR — and there’s certainly a lesson there for MN entrepreneurs.

The Main Event
But the part of the evening everyone was waiting for was still yet to come: the announcement of the winner of the 2007 MN Cup. No one but the judges, who had met earlier in the afternoon to hear the pitches from the five finalists, knew who was going to win. It was the culmination of months of activity, with the MN Cup organization gradually culling down the applicants to the chosen few deemed most promising, and then the judges choosing just a single first-place winner. Here are brief descriptions of the five finalists, as included in the event program:

1) It’s Fresh. Our mission is to deliver comprehensive solutions focused on food freshness, designed to increase consumer satisfaction, taste, and quality through simple, easy-to-use solutions.

2) Muve. Based on a ground-breaking research study on obesity from the Mayo Clinic, Muve Inc. is prepared to commercialize products and services to cure the global obesity epidemic. (Dr. James Levine, founder of the company, led that research.)

3) Persata. A free-flowing community of users who build “crowds” around specific topics and collect quantitative information, as opposed to writing articles or blogs, in order to build a mini, topic-specific database on the fly.

4) Reshare. A “distribution relationship manangement” software and strategy company, with the only patented channel management solution that enables manufacturers and brand owners to sell online directly to end users without circumventing valuable channel partners.

5) Snap Pea. This company’s pick-up sites provide the convenience of same-day delivery of a made-from-scratch, customized, and freshly assembled meal to corporate office complexes.

We had heard pitches from each of the five earlier in the program — but only two minutes each, which seemed really short. [Hey, Dan and Scott, how about three or four minutes next year?] Now the tension was mounting. Dave Cleveland, the godfather of local small business banking, was called up on stage, with his wife Carolyn, to present the awards, starting with the third place winner, Persata …. then the second place winner, It’s Fresh …. then, drumroll, the first-place winner …. Muve!

John Montague, CEO, of Muve Inc., was called to the stage amidst a standing ovation and gave a very inspired, from-the-heart talk. As someone said later, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. “We all like to help people,” he said, “and I decided (in accepting the position to lead the firm) that this company was going to do great things.” The two key words in choosing one’s work, Montague said, are “passion” and “purpose.” Muvelogo An experienced entrepreneur, he said the key turning point for him was in January of this year when he met with Dennis Anderson. [Dennis is the godfather of local executive recruiters, and has done more for emerging companies in this state than any other one person I know. So, I was delighted to hear him get this tribute.] “Our discussion changed my life,” said Montague. This company was about more passion and purpose than I’d ever imagined. Now I can’t sleep at night!” What I also thought was cool was the way Montague paid tribute to Robert Stephens, who has obviously made a big impression on him over the years. “He’s a marketing genius, and the way he brings passion and purpose to his job on a daily basis is an inspiration.”

The other really cool thing I learned Thursday evening, actually during the networking break before the awards were announced, while chatting with a client of mine, Marc Seaberg, was that he was hired as Muve’s first employee! Marc is a 2003 graduate of the University of St. Thmas. Along with his father, John Seaberg, a former senior executive of medical device giant Guidant (now part of Boston Scientific), he founded an online business in 2006 called Wellness Choice, which I had the privilege of working with over the past year. What’s interesting is that Marc and his dad were also both motivated by a sense of purpose in launching that small business, to help people lose weight and quit smoking. While the products of firms like Guidant, Boston Scientific, and Medtronic save thousands upon thousands of lives, they felt that so many of those people wouldn’t need them in the first place if they just led more healthy lifestyles.

Tonight, we were hearing from another young guy so inspired — to make a difference for mankind through his company and his personal sense of purpose. I was reminded of an entrepreneuer from an earlier era in Minnesota entrepreneurship — Earl Bakken, the founder of Medtronic, a company I once worked for, where we were all grounded in that same sense of purpose by Mr. Bakken himself. And I’m sure I wasn’t the only one in the audience thinking about this legacy.

All in all, it was exciting evening last Thursday, and I hope I’ve been able to convey some of the upbeat feeling for those who couldn’t be there in person. PagePow Launches Widgets with Advanced Reporting

PagePow Inc., a new web technology startup based in Minneapolis, today announced the launch of a private beta at PagePow.com. PagePow enables bloggers and web content owners to easily copy and paste web-based widgets into their blogs, web sites, auctions, social networking sites, and more. PagePow.com is immediately avalable as a private beta.

More widgets are planned. A key differentiator with PagePow is that bloggers and content owners will also have access to comprehensive reports generated by all the widgets they use. PagePow members will easily be able to monitor all the data their widgets produce through one simple interface at PagePow.com.

“Web site ease-of-use is a major focus for us, ” said PagePow founder Joe Sriver, an experienced UI designer whio worked in Silicon Valley for several years. “We spent a lot of time creating a simple, intuitive user interface to make sure people can come to the site, easily find what they need, and copy the code to their site within a couple minutes.”

PagePow allows webmasters and bloggers to concentrate on generating content without having to worry about programming to have the cool features they want on their web sites, said Sriver.

PagePow offers comprehensive reports detailing statistics from PagePow widgets. “We wanted to offer widgets that any site could potentially use. We won’t have widgets that have a very narrow user base. For example, our poll widget can be used for any question,” said Sriver.

Users of PagePow widgets will be able to track all the data they generate while using the widgets, by logging in to PagePow and seeing their ratings, comments, poll/quiz answers, etc. all in one place. “This is something I haven’t seen on similar widget sites,” said Sriver. Otherpagepowwidgets “We let everyone take advantage of our widgets — not just webmasters or bloggers who put the code on their pages, but any user of the widgets.” Users will receive a one-time only pop-up dialog when they confirm their vote, comment, etc., and PagePow will prompt them to log in and will briefly explain the benefits of tracking their data.

Those interested in participating in the PagePow private beta can submit their name and email address at PagePow.com. Private beta testers are invited to comment on the functionality and UI and anything else they wish, said Sriver. A stage-one Public Beta is planned for the near future.
