DEMOfall 08 vs. TechCrunch50: My Wrap-Up of Last Week

I attend a lot of conferences. A ton of conferences. I actually started reporting on tech conferences in 1997, would you believe?  Heck, I can’t even count how many I’ve attended, how many reports I’ve filed, for how many media outlets, how many endless thousands of words I’ve tapped out, at all hours of the day and night, from meeting rooms, lobbies, and bad hotel rooms all over God’s green earth (not to speak of planes flying above it).  I think that gives me some perspective on what makes for a good conference. Demofallkarawalt

So, then, I suppose you guys would like to hear my take on the events I attended in California this past week, huh?  I guess this is as good a time as any, as I drink wine on the plane home and finally get some think time, to start tapping this one out on the keyboard. Seems like my chance to wax on about my thoughts on these two opposing/overlapping events… Techcrunch50mikearrington

Now, the way I figure it, there are two ways I could do this: a really long blog post (trust me, I have tons I could say), or really short. I can’t see something in between. Since the flight is only another hour and a half, I’m thinking shorter has to be the way to go. Thus, here’s my analysis in sound-bite form.

Two Conferences for Startups: Similar, But World’s Apart
You know how the two events were similar, I suspect. I’ve blogged previously on this topic (scroll back if you want). I’ll focus here on how they were different.  So, here goes some thoughts off the top of my head:
– DEMO was for a more experienced, mature crowd. TC50 was for the "cool kids." (Cool kids by definition are not all that experienced, and frankly can be a real pain in the ass.)
– DEMO was extremely well run. TC50 wasn’t.
– DEMO was held in a resort location. TC50 was held…south of Market.
– DEMO was friendly. TC50 wasn’t.
– DEMO networking was excellent, as usual. TC50’s was…meh.
– DEMO had great social media tools set up for attendees. Never saw anything like that at TC50.
– DEMO had some great parties. TC50’s…weren’t.
– DEMO had everything on site. TC50 required riding cabs (hotel, evening events), which sucks.
– DEMO’s food was flat-out excellent. TC50’s was ho-hum.
– DEMO’s production values were top-flight. TC50…has some things to learn.
– DEMO had great bump music. Never heard much at TC50.
– DEMO’s on-stage presenters were well prepared. TC50’s varied…widely.
– DEMO’s logistics were impeccable, as usual. TC50’s were…challenged.
– DEMO’s support of press attendees is flat-out the best. TC50’s was…some emails.

But enough equivocating! How do I really feel? 🙂 I’m just telling it like it is based on my own conference experience. Do with it what you will.  Now, in defense of TC50, I was only there for one day (the last).  Maybe the first two days were better (God, I hope). Because I wasn’t there for all of TC-50, I can’t attempt to give you a list of my top-10 favorite startups that launched there.  But, since I did take in the entire DEMOfall conference, I will do my normal best picks from that event — out of the 72 startups that presented.

My Top-Ten DEMOfall Picks
Here are the ones that lit me up, presented here in no particular priority order (just alphabetically). And, to give you the gist of each, I’m including part of what I tweeted about each right as they were on stage:
•  Best Buy (Giftag.com) – of course! my hometown boys – "universal gift registry"…Firefox plug-in…just highlight product at any ecommerce site, then click Giftag icon in your browser bar, and it’s saved
•  BizEquity.com – provides valuations of small businesses, at no cost to the business…small biz in U.S.=$5.8 trillion, a couple trillion more than all Nasdaq cos!
•  BlueLava Technologies (iLovePhotos.com) – has desktop software (Mac now, Win later) that examines your photos and sends ’em to the people in the photos…ooooo!
•  DialDirections (SayWhere) – no more typing on your iPhone, just SAY it, dude! mapping, directions, reviews… (coming soon)
•  Fusion-io – announced ioDrive last yr, now ioSAN…shared solid-state storage…1.5Gb/sec – doubling perf from last yr…can transfer 5 DVDs in seconds
•  MixMatchMusic – a community for musicians and consumers alike, to mash it up…and the musicians even make money!
•  PaidInterviews – disrupting the traditional recruiting model…once candidate’s selected, they’re paid their "ask price" to go on interview…turns recruiting world upside down
•  Plastic Logic – been developing new display technology for 10 yrs, reader coming ’09…no glass, very light, long battery life….woooo!
•  PhoTrade – a visual marketplace connecting photogs, advertisers, web publishers…upload, set price, share…when you’re on deadline, you gotta find and buy a photo fast
•  SpinSpotter – out to bring transparency to news reporting…lets user put on "Spinoculars," highlight unsubstantiated words, submit objections…gad, maybe keep media honest?

Read My Play-by-Play Twitter Account of Both Events
By the way, speaking of tweets, I thought I’d give you the links to my entire Twitter archive on each of these events. The only way I can capture or save all my tweets for later blogging — at least until somebody creates a better way — is to scroll back in Twitter and shoot a screen capture of a page at a time. So, that’s what I did, and I then posted those images (PNG files) to my web site.  The trouble with this approach, of course, is that everything is arranged most recent first — so you don’t get the logical, chronological order of the event, unless you somehow go to the bottom screen capture first and read up.  Anyway, here’s my index of tweets for DEMOfall (#1 most recent, #18 oldest), and my index of tweets for TechCrunch50 (#1 most recent, #8 oldest).

Let me know what you think. Did you attend either event?  Or did you try to follow them online?  Do you even care?  What were your favorite startups at either one?

DEMO ’08 Announces Presenting Companies

Well, have I ever got a linkfest for you. Following up on my post of January 7, the big event next week is now taking shape: I just got the early word that no less than 77 new products (!) will be launched at the DEMO ’08 conference. Check out the list — did I mention it’s with links? — that I inserted for your clicking pleasure below. David Weinberger would love this one. And my other Cluetrain friend, Doc Searls, too. He once described a post I did as "linkier than a vest of chainmail."  Well, this one’s got more, Doc — about eighty, if you can stand it.  I’m getting so adept at inserting links in my Typepad WYSIWYG interface, it’s scary. Remember, it’s not so much how many people read your posts, it’s how long you engage them. Well, this one’s got a lot to keep you engaged if you’re hooked, like me, on just having to know what’s coming next in tech.

The rules for DEMO presenters state their products must not be previously available or promoted publicly, so many of the links below are brand-new sites, and some may not have much info online till Monday morning, the day registration opens.  So keep watching their sites…that’s right, via those links below.

Most of you probably don’t need me to tell you this, but DEMO is a twice yearly "emerging technology showcase" that’s known for launching some of the tech industry’s biggest innovations.  Now in its 18th year, the events have hosted a "who’s who" of company and product debuts, including those from VMWare, Google, IronPort, Apple, salesforce.com, Palm, Intel, HP, Yahoo!, Logitech, TiVo, and GrandCentral. The show’s producers, led by Chris Shipley, select presenters from hundreds of applications. Each firm launches its new product in a six-minute live stage demonstration attended by journalists, investors, and business professionals from around the globe. The press corps, of which your humble blogger is a part, will number close to 100. As I like to say, everyone from Walt Mossberg on down. (Okay, I’m at the bottom.) DEMO ’08 is being held January 28-30 in Palm Desert, CA. [You can still register — click on the graphic at right.]

DEMO kicks off 2008 with a variety of technologies for consumers and businesses alike. Here are some hints about what’s coming next week:

• a personalized telephony service converging data and voice
• broadcast-quality video delivery service for the Internet
• a Web-based platform for scalable storage delivery
• a portable learn-to-read system
• a service that enables image and video collaboration
• a solution that teaches you to play your favorite popular tunes
• a collaboration solution for business and personal use
• TiVo for your mobile phone
• HD video conferencing over IP networks
• multiple technologies for students, parents, and children
• and products from all over the world, including Australia, Canada, Finland, Israel, New Zealand,  Taiwan, and the United Kingdom.

The DEMO conferences, which are now held in China and Europe as well as the U.S., focus on
emerging technologies and new products that are hand-selected from
across the spectrum of the technology marketplace. DEMO has earned a reputation for consistently identifying tomorrow’s
cutting-edge technologies, serving as a launchpad for
companies such as Palm, E*Trade, Handspring, and U.S. Robotics, helping
them to secure venture funding, establish critical business
relationships, and influence early adopters. More information about the conferences is at Demo.com.

Oh, one more thing: my buddy Mike Garity at Network World Conferences, which runs these great events, would especially want me to tell you this:  videos of the live stage demonstrations launching each of the 77 products will be available on Demo.com beginning Tuesday afternoon, January 29.  That’s a new wrinkle, and I hear a whole new Demo.com site is launching, complete with community and social networking features. That will be cool.

Let me know what you like from the above list, or want to know more about.  I’ll be live-blogging from the event, as always.  Hell, I might even Twitter, too…from my iPhone…while simultaneously uploading the pix I’m shooting to Flickr…or maybe Tittr.

UPDATE (3:30 pm Central):  To fix three links…  🙂

DEMO ’08 Is Coming – And I’m Pumped

Fellow innovation junkies, your day is fast approaching: it’s almost DEMO time again, and I can’t wait!  You’ve heard me say before that this is simply the best tech conference there is, which is why I cover every single one of them. Demo08reignite
The anticipation for this event is like no other, not to speak of the surprises — with up to 70 new companies or products launching at each of the twice yearly conferences. This is where you see the new stuff. How does 2,380 company launches over 17 years of experience sound?  It’s an amazing record. Through it all, as the DEMO folks say, their focus "remains on one thing: the future." Read more on the DEMO About page.

Jwmarriott1So, yes, January 28-30, I’ll be in Palm Desert, CA, attending the DEMO ’08 conference as a member of the press corps again. And, as part of this prestigious group, I’ve been given the opportunity to offer Tech~Surf~Blog readers a special discount to attend.
You can get more than $600 off if you register through this special, whiz-bang link. Demo07poolsceneClick here for more DEMO information and conference details, and here’s a great FAQ page, too. (Just be aware that this discount cannot be combined with other offers or promotions, or applied to registrations that have already been processed.)
I really hope you can make it, because I love to meet my readers in person!  And I know you will find it a valuable experience.Jwmarriott2_2

The thing about DEMO is that it’s so much fun, too. Here are some of the events. There’s nothing that beats partyin’ with your fellow innovation junkies (between blog posts, of course).

And the venue?  Oh, baby, this place is awesome: the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort, as you can see from a few pix I’ve included here. Click here as well for more about the hotel and travel details.

Here’s how the DEMO folks recently talked about their record over the years in picking winners. They do have an uncanny ability to uncover new trends:

"DEMO was there when the seeds of Web 2.0 were planted… exploring some
of the first Web services before we even had buzz words to describe
them. We have stayed true to our mission: to find great innovation
wherever it occurs, identify market trends through the lens of the
products coming to market, and expose you to new ideas and
opportunities.

"DEMO does not follow trends – we invent them.
Never has this been more apparent when the NBC Today Show segment on
January 1st featured Top Tech Trends for 2008 and highlighted two DEMO
Alumni who launched at previous DEMO events – Ugobe and Dash. It was
great to see companies making an impact on the market with technologies
identified by DEMO two years earlier."

Want to read some more good stuff about their predictions and trends for 2008?  The DEMOblog is a great resource, written by the show’s executive producer, Chris Shipley, and edited by Keith Shaw. It’s one of the best kept secrets out there in blog-land, and is actually an online version of the venerable DEMOletter.

So, net-net — you really want to know what’s coming?  Attend DEMO — simple as that.  See you there if you can make it!  And watch for my next post on the event, which will include a listing and links to all the presenting companies, just as soon as they’re announced to us press folk (the weekend before).

A-Conferencing I Will Go….

Summer’s usually not a big time for me to be blogging from tech conferences, but I decided I had to get to Ad:Tech Chicago, July 31 – August 1, because nothing beats hot, old sweaty downtown Chicago in the summertime. Adtech No, seriously, I’m getting soo into ad technology and widget technology these days, how could I miss it? And I actually love being on Lake Michigan — literally! It’s being held in the Navy Pier conference center. Lots of good speakers and exhibitors at this one that I want to hear from. Please, definitely look me up if you’re there and think you have something disruptive in the world of advertising and marketing that we should all know about.

The next day, I’m back in Minneapolis for a local gig, put on by The Collaborative. It’s called Summer Venture Camp, and it should draw a couple hundred of us crazy tech startup Minnesotans looking to rule the world from the Land of 10,000 Lakes (one of which I’m sitting next to right now, and about to dive in). Venturecamp I’ll see a lot of my friends and clients at this one….including a bunch of you in my GetGoMN network, I hope!

Then, come September, I’m stoked about being able to blog from my favorite conference of ’em all, another one of the famed DEMO events — this one DEMOfall ’07”,
in my favorite other place in the world, San Diego. Demofall07 Looking forward to seeing many of my media and blogger friends at this one — and, yes, I know a lot of you VCs colleagues will be lurking about, too… 🙂 Nothing beats hearing some 70 startups, many heretofore in stealth mode, pitch their new wares. DEMO rocks! And you’ll read all about it again right here, o faithful readers….

Not sure where I might be venturing off to in October but, in November, I just have to blog from the Defrag Conference in Denver. It’s being run by, among others, my old buddy Eric Norlin, with sponsors including the Rocky Mountain Venture Capital Association and Colorado’s CTEK organization. Defregconf Guys like Brad Feld, VC extraordinaire in Boulder, are involved, too. I just gotta find out more about the the brand of startup mojo those guys have going’ there — it’s awesome! And how can you miss an event with a sales pitch like this:

“Defrag is the first conference focused solely on the internet-based tools that transform loads of information into layers of knowledge, and accelerate the ‘aha’ moment. Defrag is about the space that lives in between knowledge management, social networking, collaboration and business intelligence. Defrag is not a version number. Rather it’s a gathering place for the growing community of implementers, users, builders and thinkers that are working on the next wave of software innovation.”

Hurry up and register for this one. The buzz is building, and they only have room for 300 — which is a great size for an event. You can get to know people a lot better in a group of this size, and there will be mucho heavies in attendance here.

What events are on your radar in the next few months? Tell me in the comments….

Written from the shores of the Whitefish
Chain, north of Brainerd, Minnesota.

Conferences I Plan to Blog…

Just to update you, o faithful blog readers, I thought I’d mention what conferences I’ll be blogging from in coming weeks and months. First of all, I’m happy to report I’ve been accepted again as a press registrant at the DEMO 2007 event, which is January 30 – February 1. This will be about my fourth DEMO event. Demo07banner The venue this year was switched from Phoenix to Palm Desert, California, which should be a glorious locale at this time of year (especially when I’ll be escaping Minnesota winter!). I always look forward to this conference, not only because 70 of the hottest startups in the country pitch their businesses here, but because it attracts so much buzz and media attention, more than virtually any other event all year long. The media list is like a who’s who. As always, companies you’ll be reading about a year, two years, three years from now will first be heard from at DEMO. And I’ll do my best to report the highlights for you… [See categories to the right for my coverage of both DEMO events in 2006.]

Another event I’m thinking about covering (but not sure yet if I can break away) is the big momma of ’em all: CES …which used to stand for Consumer Electronics Show, but now wants to be so much more (see theme). Being a content guy, how could I not like this one? Haven’t been to Vegas in a while — caught an Interop show there a couple years ago, and of course attended many Comdex events back in the day. CES, by the way, may be big, but it still doesn’t draw as many people as Comdex did in its heydey. Nonetheless, the show is today the “world’s largest tradeshow for consumer technology and North America’s largest annual tradeshow of any kind.” Get this: it will feature 2700 exhibitors covering floorspace the equivalent of 35 football fields(!), and will have 140,000 attendees — 25,000 of them from other countries. Ces07logotheme Those attendees will include manufacturers, retailers, content providers and creators, broadband developers, wireless carriers, cable and satellite TV providers, installers, engineers, corporate buyers, government leaders, financial analysts and the media. [How could I not like pal-in’ around with those installers, huh? Cable guys attend this thing?? Maybe I should reconsider….] Anyway, there will be a ton of press at this one, and the bloggers will outnumber them — guaranteed. The combined total will easily be in the thousands. Robert Scoble, the well known author and former head blogger at Microsoft, who’s now VP of Media Development at Podtech, will even have his own suite where bloggers can hang out. Here’s what he said on his blog: “By the way, our BlogHaus at CES will be open to ANY blogger, not just those ‘blessed’ by Microsoft or some other company. You just need to have me put your name on the list so you can get up to our suite.” I did.

Finally, I’m looking out to March and thinking I’d love to blog ETech again. O’Reilly is my favorite publisher and conference producer. [You’ll note I recommend many of its books under the “Reading” subhead at the right. Disclosure: I do get free books from time to time, but only post those I really find of value.] Oreillyetechlogo I’ve really enjoyed reporting on this conference in the past, and love running into my old blog buddies there, like Doc Searls and David Weinberger. Sure, it’s a developer event. But, as I’ve said before, some of my best friends are developers…. 🙂 And this event draws an awesome, a-list of attendees, too, at all levels, and many other great bloggers. Anyway, it would be fun to capture it again for y’all, and I hope to get out to San Diego for it in late March. [Okay, it’s an excuse to hang out again at my favorite beach, too 🙂 … ]
