Tim O’Reilly Says Web 2.0 Ain’t Over

It was getting late — for me, anyway, having flown in from “back east” as they say here in Cal. But, before I faded, I managed to catch part the opening evening sessions of the Emerging Technology Conference on Monday evening. I joined it in progress, after a great dinner with fellow bloggers Steve Borsch and Marc Orchant at a place called Buster’s Longboard Bar, which was full of surfing decor and photos. I was lovin’ it. (And the shark fish tacos were excellent.) Timoreillyddavidson But I then managed to slip into Tim O’Reilly’s session called “O’Reilly Radar” and was glad I did, because he uncorked a great new definition of Web 2.0 … at least one I hadn’t heard yet.

“Web 2.0 is not over and out yet,” he said. And he went on to to describe what now distinguishes Web 2.0. This is O’Reilly’s definition:

“Systems that harness network effects to get better the more people use them.”

I think that’s a great way to freshen up what’s become a bit of a tired term for many. Thank you, Tim! He went on to touch on a few companies that ostensibly fit this definition … or are poised to, anyway: Freebase, an open/shared structured database of the world’s knowledge … personal financial management site Wesabe (O’Reilly mentioned his firm is an investor) … and a stealthy investor market intelligence company called Mint.

“Web 2.0 is moving from consumer to mainstream business,” O’Reilly said. He ended his talk with a request of the audience: “Let us know when you see people having a lot of fun with technology. We want to know.” That’s a key reason so many people turn out for this event, I’ve decided — to learn what’s new and what’s fun. I think that’s great.

Speaking of which, Tim’s talk was followed by an absolutely fabulous magician act — actually, a “mathamagician” — named Art Benjamin. To say he wowed this largely developer crowd was an understatement. The guy was amazing, had lots of willing audience participants get up on stage, and got applause like you couldn’t believe. But, he was so good, he was making my brain ache. I was fading fast. So, off to the room I went, figuring I’d naturally be up way early and could blog then without falling asleep at my Powerbook. The first day’s sessions start in an hour or so.

eTech: Magical Mystery Tour

I’m off on an adventure tomorrow morning, flying to San Diego again, this time for the O’Reilly Emerging Technology Conference, where I’ll be reporting for Conferenza and posting to this blog. I’m looking forward to running into some old friends, and to an exciting program. The “magic” theme this year should be fascinating, based on the descriptions of some sessions I’ve highlighted below.

What technologies are “poised to blast off into the realm of magic?” O’Reilly asks, as it launches its sixth annual eTech event. [It will be the third one I’ve reported on, by the way.] The goal is to “balance pie-in-the-sky theorizing with practical, real-world information and conversation,” says the firm. The format consists of tutorials, breakout sessions, keynotes, and that most revered form of interaction — hallway conversations! — which “will hopefully spark enough unconventional thinking to change how you see your world.” Etechtheme400

The dates are Monday, March 26 through Thursday, March 29, and the venue is the Manchester Grand Hyatt right on the harbor in downtown San Diego. The promise, says O’Reilly, is for you to be able to learn which areas of technology have sufficiently advanced to the level of magic. So, I’m joining more than 1200 technologists, CTOs, hackers, researchers, thinkers, strategists, entrepreneurs, business developers, and VCs that are expected to participate in this year’s event. Grandhyatt I know from years past that the attendees at eTech are top notch — many leading developers, trendsetters, founders, and VCs (definitely a lot names you’d recognize). The strength of eTech, according to O’Reilly, is how it “taps into the creative spirit of all attendees, sparking provocative encounters and productive inspiration that continue long after the conference ends” — and I agree based on personal experience. In addition to the variety of sessions and extra-curricular activities, eTech has an exhibit hall featuring a focused group of about 14 exhibitors and sponsors.

eTech Sessions That Especially Sound Good
So, what are some the talks I’ve flagged out? On the first full day, Tuesday, I plan to catch as many of these as I can (some overlap each other, unfortunately):

• The Coming Age of Magic (ThingM) – Excerpt: “The desktop metaphor is dead … Interaction design is significantly trailing the capabilities of the technology because of how difficult it is to explain what all this new stuff does … The desktop metaphor was useful for twenty years as a way to structure and explain information-processing technology. I propose “magic” as a metaphor for structuring interactions with embedded information processing technology …”

• The Role of Ubiquitous Web 2.0 Technologies in Everyday Life (Danah Boyd) – Excerpt: “While the ‘radical’ practices of young people and the organizational fetishes of technologists are certainly a curiosity to be examined, the real shift is happening in the lives of everyday people without an ounce of reflexivity …”

• Patterns: From Fabrics to Fabrication – Excerpt: “Today, the re-emergence of craft is part of the DIY movement that is discovering new tools for personal fabrication.

And here’s my vote for best named session:
• Scalability: Set Amazon’s Servers on Fire, Not Yours (SmugMug) – Excerpt: “With companies like SmugMug, Flickr, and YouTube growing by leaps and bounds, storage is a vital but expensive ingredient. Building, scaling, and managing large storage installations is cash — and labor –intensive. Amazon provides a simple API that exposes their internal storage architecture at utility prices. Suddenly, anything is possible. Unlimited, always-on storage everywhere in the world.”

• Sufficiently Advanced Magic (MIT Media Lab) – Excerpt: “…magicians and scientists often play on the same borders of the unknown. Magicians, however, do not have to kowtow to the constraints of reality as technologists do … If technology is man’s search to express control over his environment, scientists should look to magicians for inspiration and guidance as to what has engaged people for millennia … they continue to be successful by adapting their techniques and presentations in order to affect people profoundly.”

• Engaging with Web 2.0 Outside the Browser (Adobe) – Excerpt: “Web 2.0 is more than a social networking phenomenon. It’s a renaissance in web development … Rich Internet applications (RIAs), which break out from the traditional page-based web paradigm and currently run in the web browser, will soon be able to run on the desktop, both on and offline, with the ability to access local data and use web services to present an integrated and unique user experience … best practices and techniques that leverage existing web development skills to build and deploy Web 2.0 applications that bridge the Web and desktop … a new application model for content delivery and collaboration … how HTML, JavaScript, PDF, and Flash are coming together in a new project, code-named Apollo.”

• Pipes: A Tool for Remixing the Web (Yahoo!) – Excerpt: “Developers can use Pipes to combine data sources and user input into mashups without having to write code.”

• Web Scale Computing (Amazon Web Services) – Excerpt: “Web 2.0 business models are about competing on ideas, not on resources. Yet over 70% of most startup development effort goes into undifferentiated “heavy lifting”! … Using AWS, developers can build software applications leveraging the same robust, scalable, and reliable technology that powers Amazon’s retail business … 200,000 developers have registered on Amazon’s developer site to create applications based on these services.”

• Ajax Unplugged: Architecture and Tips for Taking Your Applications Offline (Zimbra) – Excerpt: “Looking back, 2006 may have been the year of Ajax … But despite its game-changing hype, Ajax is limited in its usefulness, it only helps people when connected to the Web. Surprisingly enough, people want access to their applications even when they aren’t connected to the Internet …”

And…drum roll…my vote for the funnest sounding session at eTech:
• 1/2 Baked (panel: 500 Hats, Feedburner, First Round Capital, August Capital) – Excerpt: “Half-Baked Dot Com is a participatory exercise in entrepreneurial improv theatre conducted by five teams of startup addicts and judged by an estranged panel of venture capitalists…or several crackpots and D-list bloggers, whomever shows up first … Half-Baked is the latest Web 2.0 craze that’s sweeping the un-conference circuit. Show up early and bring your A-game if you’d like to participate, otherwise bring your camera to record the heinous crime perpetrated on an audience who paid good money to attend this event.”

Shut Down by Google, They’re Baack – with ‘iReader’

A Minneapolis-based tech firm, almost put out of business by Google last year with for scraping its site with its ePrecis technology, is back today as Syntactica. [As Syntactica president Henry Neils said to me last week, “Like they don’t scrape everything out there.” Hah!] Under this new company name, they’re introducing the iReader Web Previewer tool. Ireaderlogo So, take that Google! It previews the content of a web link without clicking on it — by studying the language, the linguistics, behind it. Pretty heavy stuff, but this team of developers has been working on perfecting this technology for years, so this is certainly no upstart. Perhaps they’re onto an application of it now that will stick, and that the powers-that-be will allow to happen. User acceptance will tell the story, of course, and that’s why reaction in the blogosphere will be big for these guys. Smartly, they’re opening the technology up via open source XML web services, I learned last week.

Richard MacManus at Read/Write Web has already done a great post called iReader Previews The Content Behind Links. It tells the story well, so I won’t repeat it. It’s also worth taking a look back to see what he blogged about ePrecis in October 2005 on ZDnet, calling it “next generation search.” [By the way, the old ePrecis site, which, interestingly, still shows up in a Google search(!), won’t seem to come up today. Must be getting hit too hard.]

The beta they just launched is an easy plug-in install for IE or Firefox (Mac or PC), and it’s sure to create a lot of conversation out there. Try it out on some of your favorite news sites, like the NY Times, CNN, MSN, etc. Seems to work great on the story links down near the bottom of the NY Times page, for example, where stories are grouped into categories. Let me know what you think. Or better yet, tell the company: they’re about to launch their blog, too, where you can do that.

Note one VERY KEY thing: you can turn the iReader plug-in on or off! So, if it’s bothersome to have these little “preview windows” showing up for you on some sites, just right-click your mouse to toggle it on and off. Not sure how you do it on a Mac yet, though, in Firefox. I think they’re adding some notes on the downloading page…

The Takeaways of Demo 2006

Demoviewfromroom_1 Okay, here’s the 30th and last post in my “DEMO 2006” category (many also tagged in other categories, as listed on the right) since I began publishing pre-conference. So, who could have done more posts than this — maybe CNet? Then again, quantity isn’t everything… 🙂 But I was honored to be on a list with many of the great bloggers covering the event — especially since it was my first conference as a blogger (though not as a reporter, for which the number is probably 40 or more).

Just for the heck of it, I’m including a few photos of the surroundings at Demo, which I took with my cell phone cam — showing things I was too busy to do, like golf, pool, hot tub. But I didn’t care — didn’t have time to. [Besides, I had my beach time and a surf session in San Clemente the day before I got there.]

This post is essentially my recap on the themes or takeaways I got from this great happening….this blockbuster celebration of tech and entrepreneurship. Net-net: I wouldn’t have missed it for the world! Demohotelpool_1 It was non-stop buzz, business models, and blabbing about everything imaginable relating to today’s souped-up economy for technology startups (especially Internet-related ones)…a giant energy-drink slurpee lasting three days. And the people — wow! I know I met many who’ll be valuable contacts and friends for years to come. Plus I learned about some cool new services that’ll help me in my crazy, tech-challenged world…just as I know they’ll help you.

So here, as best as I can break down something this intensely information-packed, are the themes I got from DEMO 2006. (Note time didn’t allow me to post about every single one of the companies I mention here; but I’ve included links to all their sites if you wish to read more.)

User-generated content and sharing is exploding. To say that consumer-generated content is a major trend in this age of “new media” and social networking I don’t think will surprise you. If you’ve read some of my previous posts, you know it was the major theme of the conference. [And there would be a sub-theme you got out of reading those, too: revenue-sharing with content creators.] Demopool_1 Companies in point who presented at Demo that are taking advantage of this trend in various ways include: Vizrea, TagWorld, SmileBox, Zingee, LocaModa, Sharpcast, Tiny Pictures, GarageBand.com, Yahoo! Photos (of course), Multiverse Network, and Gravee….and I posted about every one of ’em.

Search goes wider, search goes deeper. Meaning more data types as relates the former, and, no surprise, going vertical for the latter. Presenting companies that fit into this theme included Krugle, Riya, AOL via its acquisition of Truveo (online sometime this spring), Nexidia, Gravee, BiggerBoat, Kaboodle, Raw Sugar, and Kosmix….several of which I posted about.

E-commerce can still get better and easier. As big as it is (one example: BestBuy.com, a site on whose launch team I served, is now selling more than a billion bucks a year), we’re hardly done with e-commerce improvements. And that notion is sure to be welcomed by today’s increasingly savvy, instant-gratification online buyers. Companies worth a look here include Transparansee, Pay By Touch, and PayWi (which lets you buy from your cell phone). I was also impressed with CNet Channel’s intelligent cross-sell technology. This is a tool for e-tailers that with save a huge amount of hassle, automating what’s been a very time-intensive and hit-or-miss process for online store managers.

Now that phone service is free or really cheap, what more can we do with it? Skype thundered into this space in a huge way — and thank God people now have a decent moniker they can attach to the concept instead of “VOIP”! And the category will only get huger, as we all know. Watch out for upstarts that are gonna ride this trend with more innovations — such as being able to make Skype calls from your cell phone: EQO Communications…and getting a whole rich set of features for your VOIP residential service: My People.

Small business needs big help with information technology. It’s a huge market, but what will appeal to them and how do you reach them? Two companies that are giving it a try are Interprise, which has a free online ERP/CRM solution for the little guys….and Sprout Systems, which is developing online solutions for companies with 10 employees or fewer, coming out of the chute first (now seeking Series A) with an email management system. [I wish both luck. Raise the big bucks, or get a deep-pocketed gorilla to buy you.]

P2P is not going away – and more apps are on the way. If you think peer-to-peer technology had its day, think again. Just because it got a bad name for a while doesn’t mean it won’t change the world. At least three of the presenting companies at Demo are using the technology to buiild their dream: Zingee, a flat-out content sharing play, as I posted about previously…Vsee, which is using the technology to improve desktop video conferencing…and Tiny Pictures, which says it has P2P technology to enable you to share your cell phone pix quickly and easily.

What DEMO 2006 was NOT about. The biggest thing was it wasn’t about gadgets, as the event was known to have been for so many years. Today, the technology world — whether it’s consumer or enterprise — is much more about services. Gadgets are only a means to enable a service, for the user to do something valuable he or she needs to get done. I sit here hard-pressed to name game-changing gadgets presented at the event…. Okay, there was MooBella, the customized, Linux-based ice cream vending machine, and Pleo, the new robotic toy from the inventor of Furby. Yeah, they were cool, but so what? I’m not in the food business or the toy business, and I don’t think most of you are either. The producers threw those in just for shock value and dramatic effect. [And, trust me, Demo’s producers know how to get publicity. They also know how to get buzz, which is why they had so had so many bloggers there. If you want to know what I mean, read this great new post from Guy Kawasaki on how to get buzz these days.] Two gadgets of note I just remembered were the iGuitar — very cool, but you gotta be a musician, which I’m not anymore (surfing took over)…though it’s a big market space ($3 billion) they’re playing in. And the Chili™ from ZinkKat was the other one. But don’t try to find a photo of the device on their web site — it hasn’t been updated since before DEMO! [Hello?] The Chili is the “first wearable cell phone/MP3 player/Podcast and web stream receiver, all on one,” says the company, which is aiming it (of course) at teenagers, for use in the home. [Too bad the voice interface, which is how you operate the thing, sounded so bad. Here’s a clue: no matter how cool your gadget looks, if the interface isn’t right, you have some…uh, work to do?]

And one more thing to take away from DEMO. We’re all learning a lot about blogging, folks. Me included. [And there’s nothing like throwing yourself into it headlong to learn from the inside.] Demosilhouette But I was fascinated by how blog-savvy so many of the companies are that launched at DEMO — and I learned a lot from them. They get the blogging model, the power of the blogging community. They spent just as much time talking up the bloggers as they did the traditional press. Blogging is even changing the model of how some tech companies launch — read: without traditional PR. My fellow blogger and conference reporter Shel Israel did a great post on this topic (just prior to Demo), and this is about the third time I’ve linked to it — it’s that major. Just another example of how the growing online community is changing the game. And Guy Kawasaki’s post, cited above, just adds to that message.
