I’m at #Gluecon 2013 – Preparing for My Brain to Explode :-)

Gluecon2013-bigroomSitting in the big room — largest Gluecon ever, and I'm back for my fifth!  As you can see from the agenda, it's packed with hot topics… even six-across breakout sessions this year, as event organizer Eric Norlin told me in a brief interview just before the kickoff of Day One. Watch for more from me as the event unfolds today and tomorrow…

UPDATE 5/23: Haven't been able to post a lot here yet — but, in case you didn't know, I've been tweeting my brains out about happenings at #gluecon here.

What Comes First in Fargo – the #MidwestMobileSummit or the Spring Floods?

MidwestMobileSummit-logoThey're both coming soon! And they may actually be arriving about the same time. But, no worries, the first-year Midwest Mobile Summit will be held April 28-29 in downtown Fargo ND, which I'm told is a pretty safe area of town from the rising waters that come every spring to this city partially bordered on the Red River.

But if you really want to find out when the floods
H2O-1might arrive — well, it turns out there's an iOS app for that.  Its name?  Why, H2O Fargo, of course!  And it became available a couple of weeks ago in the App Store, just in time for the inevitable rising waters.

H2O-2I learned about the app when I met with the guys from Myriad Devices, a mobile app development shop that's the lead sponsor and organizer of the Midwest Mobile Summit. They developed the flood app as a public service for their community, and Jake Joraanstad, CEO, told me the app was approved by Apple in only one day! I guess they understood the urgency of the situation. (Screenshots of the app shown.)

The MIdwest Mobile Summit has big support of the local community, and will draw a large representation of the area's significant technology industry, including angels and VCs, Microsoft and ex-Microsoft managers, NDSU officials, and a
H2O-3strong mobile development community.  Read more about the the schedule, speakers, and sponsors at the event site — and how to obtain tickets. You can purchase Day One, Day Two, or both days. Overnight accommocations for Sunday, April 28, are availabke at the nearby Radisson downtown (info at event site). Several speakers and attendees are coming from the Twin Cities. See you there if you can make it!

What Kind of Press Coverage Can a Minnesota Startup Get at CES?

Sensus_case+package_275wWell, plenty if its name is Canopy and its product is a revolutionary, touch-sensitive iPhone case, which adds touch technology to the back and right side.  The Sensus™ case drew huge interest at the 2013 International CES show in Las Vegas last week — as you can see from a partial list of media coverage below, stories known to have been published as of today's date. Many other blogs and news-aggregator sites reposted several of these stories, and numerous YouTube members posted video clips as well. In addition, the company's CES press release, sent via BusinessWire, was posted by a total of 465 media outlets.

Needless to say, Canopy had a very successful CES!  And I'm proud to say that I helped orchestrate this coverage, working in concert with a trusted technology industry colleague, Barb Stinnett. It was an awesome experience working with the technology media to get the great story of the Canopy Sensus™ case out to the world!

An Interview with United Healthcare Group’s Head of Innovation

On the lookout for hometown companies at CES, I had a chance to swing by the very impressive United Healthcare Group booth in the South Hall.  Actually, calling it a booth would not do it justice!  A “massive presence” would be a better description… 🙂

UHG-CES2013-booth

While there, I had the opportunity to meet Nick Martin, VP of Innovation and R&D. I chatted with him about the various technology-related healthcare initiatives the company was showing off at CES, and some of the partner firms UHG is working with on these initiatives.

Here’s my three-minute interview, as I posted it on SoundCloud:

It Was Tech-Conference Heaven This Week in Denver for #Defragcon and #Blurcon

Defrag-Blur-bannersBut if you follow me on Twitter, I guess you, uh, knew that… 🙂 Because it was nonstop, crazy, hair-on-fire tweeting from me Tuesday through Friday!! These back-to-back events were fantastic — I got to see many old friends, make some important new contacts, learn about lots of cool new startups, plus see some amazing new technology — particularly of the human-computer interface variety at the Blur event, Thursday evening and Friday.

The Twitter hashtags for both events were extremely active, to say the very least! Someone even posted a pie chart of the active tweeters towards the end of the first day of Defrag, which I reposted on Google+ here. I didn't get the total count of tweets at that point, but it had to be huuge, with #Defragcon surely a trending topic on Twitter for a while.

For some of my other coverage of both events, listen to these SoundCloud audio interviews I did during the three days, mostly of speakers or exhibitors. In addition, I posted all my photos to this Flicker set, covering both events. You can also see a blog post I did on this site, right before Blur, highlighting the two awesome Minneapolis startups I was instrumental in getting there: Canopy and QFO Labs, both of which made some amazing connections.

It was my sixth consecutive year at Defrag, ever since it began in 2007. It was my first Blur, which had previously been held twice in Orlando. This was the first year it was colocated with Defrag, which I understand will continue. The well known VC firm Foundry Group is a backer of these conferences, run by my longtime colleague and friend Eric Norlin, as well as the Glue conference developer event, held each May at the same location, the Omni Interlocken Resort in Broomfield, CO. Watch for the dates of the 2013 Glue, to be be announced soon on that web site.  It will be the fourth annual, and I intend to be there. Join me!
